2016-2017 STU-EMN Exchange Report

Time : 2017-03-29
Reported by FENG Weiqian

At the end of August 2016, we 4 persons set off to Ecole de Management de Normandie which locates in Caen France, to study for one semester. During these four months, we earned treasurable experiences that we have never had in our campus life and city life.

As for study, France education system are more into practice, they encourage you to have your own ideas. The teaching method is quite different from China and France, in France, normally there will be two teachers in charge of each subject, one of them will teach the theoretical knowledge and the other one will help us apply the knowledge in to practice. During our learning process, we found that the teachers always love to use the real cases that firms in society had ever been in diploma or been succeeded, and asked us to analyzed these cases applying the knowledge we learned. Besides, teachers always cheered us to speak out our voice, they admired different opinions or even opposite ideas, only if you can list up reasonable supporting details. In their world, they weight innovation more than absolute authority, that’s the main reason the foreign students come up with new ideas. What’s more, the teachers also emphasize how students express their ideas instead of feeding the students with knowledge only. Thus the students here more or less take the initiative to learn. Last but not less, the ways teachers teach varies from each other, because they are from individualism culture, therefore they are not limited by certain teaching methods, instead, they create their own teaching styles. Most of them are kind and friendly to students and they share one thing in common, grasp the interest of students.

As for life, we acquired quite a lot in these four months. At the beginning, it was a little difficult to get used to local custom, as time passed, we found that we harvested splendid moments. Being with the group of international students were of great impression: they have different backgrounds varying from ages, wealth and status etc., but what they have one thing in accordance: they play hard, work hard, study hard and fight hard for the life they want. How their behaviors acted like did impress me a lot and drove me to think about what should my life be? What kind of life I want and how should I fight for it? Furthermore, foreign university students are more independent compared to Chinese. They have strong living skills and they acted like people who have already step into the society. They live in a independent room, they need to cook for themselves, try to persuade others or compromise when they have different opinions; they need to negotiate with each other when they get into conflicts and they need to deal with some emergency situation by themselves. They are quite like birds without nest. All these abilities are not that we can learn from classes, those are what we can only acquire from living day by day when we are out of our families’ protection.

I was feeling grateful to write this exchange report, not only for the chance Shantou University gave me to be exchanged to EMN, but also for what I got during this semester in Ecole de Management de Normandie in Caen, France.
