From November 2nd to 4th, 2018, the Second Young Scholars Forum of CSMA was held in STU. The forum was hosted by the China Strategic Management Academy and co-organized by Strategic Management Research Committeethe of the China Enterprise Management Research Institute and undertaken by Shantou University Business School.Nearly 200 senior scholars and young scholars from dozens of domestic and foreign universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, East China University of Science and Technology, South China University of Technology, Harbin Engineering University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and so forth, gathered together in STU. Participants thoroughly discussed with a focus on the theme of “Integration of Enterprise Internationalization: Empirical Experience and Theory Creation”. The forum contained doctor workshop, keynote speech, proposal and drills on scientific issues, parallel seminar, entrepreneur forum, and exchange of research experiences etc.
In the afternoon of November 2nd, the doctor workshop held in the seminar room of Shantou University Library to warm up the Forum. The workshop was divided into two parallel sessions. They were presided over by Professor Li Donghong from Tsinghua University and Dr. Jin Yuan from Shanghai Maritime University. They shared the reports entitled "The Effect of Joint Venture Experience on Firms' Subsequent Innovation Capabilities", "Knowledge Distance, Absorptive Capacity and Innovative Performance of Chinese Enterprises' Transnational M&A", and “Relational Embeddedness and Internationalization Post-Entry Speed of Chinese Multinational Enterprises: insights from knowledge acquisition process” and so on.
At 7:00 pm on November 2nd, the 2nd CSMA Young Scholars Forum officially kicked off in the lecture hall of the STU library. The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Professor Liang Qiang from STU Business School. Professor Lin Danming, Vice President of Shantou University, firstly gave a speech on behalf of the organizer. President Lin expressed warm welcome to the guests from universities at home and abroad who participated in the forum, and his expectations to the scientific exchanges and collision of thoughts between experts and scholars in the strategic management field through this forum. He also expected that everyone jointly contributes wisdom and strengths to the research of Chinese enterprises’ internationalization strategy and provides intellectual support for the nation's “Belt and Road” construction.
Then, Professor Lan Hailin, Convener of the CSMA and Professor of South China University of Technology, delivered a speech. Professor Lan introduced the background of the CSMA Young Scholars Forum and the theme of this forum was the integration on internationalization strategy of Chinese enterprises . Subsequently, Prof. Wu Changyu from Peking University gave a speech entitled “The Research Frontier of Chinese Enterprises’ Internationalization in the Field of Global Strategy”.
In the morning of November 3rd, Professor Huang Manli from South China University of Technology hosted the keynote speech of the forum. Associate Professor Bu Maoliang from Nanjing University, Associate Professor Hao Bin from East China University of Science and Technology, and Associate Professor Cheng Yang from Aalborg University, Denmark, respectively delivered the keynote speeches of “Enterprise Internationalization Strategy, Environmental Management and Social Responsibility”, “Technical Legality VS. System Legality: Legal Strategies for Chinese Science and Technology Manufacturing Enterprises to Enter International Market”, and “Global Manufacturing Network Management”, closely followed the theme, and analyzed issues about strategies, technologies, laws, and environment in the process of enterprises’ internationalization at multiple levels and at multiple angles. Professor Lan Hailin, Professor Wu Changqi and Professor Wang Qin made detailed comments and suggestions on the above reports.
In the afternoon of November 3rd, three young scholars’ parallel seminars were held in the E-teaching building of STU. Young scholars had expressed their opinions on the issues about core competence of enterprises, internationalization of multinational corporations in new economies, continuous cross-border mergers and acquisitions, and foreign investment by enterprises. The discussions were in-depth and intensive. Finally, hosted by Associate Professor Zeng Xianju of Shenzhen University, the representative professors who are professor Li Yanwen, Associate Professor Liu Xiaoyuan and Associate Professor Zou Bo gave in-depth summaries for each seminar.
This forum also introduced an entrepreneur lecture . At 7:00 pm on November 3rd, Mr. Li Wenhai, Vice President of Thailand Charoen Pokphand Group and Executive Chairman of CP Lotus, delivered a wonderful speech entitled “Three Rivers to the Sea and Return Home by One Paper, Interpretation of the Unbeaten Culture Code of the Chaoshan Merchants in 500 Years.”
In the morning of November 4th, there is an exchange session on research experiences for young scholars. Professor Li Yu from the University of International Business and Economics shared some experiences in academic research. Professor Du Yifei from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, as a representative of young scholars in this session, made a report of "From ‘Phenomenon to Theory’ to ‘Phenomenon and Theory’ – My Past Research on Cross-Border Expansion of Local Latecomer Enterprises". Professor Zhou Changhui from Peking University and Professor Li Ping from the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, shared opinions about their speeches and expressed their expectations on young scholars that we will not forget the original heart, and be willing to take responsibility and have confidence.
Senior scholars' exchange session on research experiences were hosted by Professor Jiang Jihai from Chongqing University. Professor Jing Runtian from Shanghai Jiao Tong University gave a report entitled “Doing Meaningful Management Research” on behalf of senior scholars, sharing his experiences in the research process.
The summary and closing session of the forum was presided over by Professor Liang Qiang from Shantou University. Professor Ouyang Taohua from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics gave a detailed review and summary of the conference. Professor Ouyang believes that as a scholar, it is necessary to have a spirit of "new youth", to maintain positive energy and always maintain a passion for academics, in order to drive its own continuous improvement. At the same time, she also expressed sincere gratitude to the convener, organizers of this conference, Shantou University Business School.
Finally, the convener of the session, Professor Lan Hailin, delivered a message and announced the plans and arrangements for the 2019 Annual Conference of the CSMA and the Third Youth Scholars Forum.
With a warm applause, the Second Young Scholars Forum of CSMA came to a successful ending. In this forum, more than 20 senior and young scholars gave 23 keynote speeches. Dozens of guests participated in the questions and comments, which created an opportunity for many Chinese strategic management scholars to stimulate their ideas and learn from each other. The high participation and interactivity won the appreciation of many scholars.
