At the invitation of Lee Ka Shing Foundation, Ms Chen Wenling, director of the Research Office of State Coucil, visited Shantou University Business School and delivered a lecture: 'the re-positioning of strategic regional economy in China' in the Economic Forum. Professor Xu Zongling, Dean of Business School, chaired the forum. Mr Xie Zesheng, Secretary General of Shantou Municipal Government, Professor Lin Danming, Vice President of Shantou University, and a number of professors of Business School were invited to the event.
While admitting the economic achievements attained after 30 years of 'reform and open', Ms Chen pointed out that there are still rooms for improvement. Inequalities among societal segments, according to Ms Chen, has led to imbalanced development across the country. For instance, the provision of public service, medical insurance and education are vastly imbalanced among regions. Gaps also existed between urban and rural areas, in trading, in the imbalanced regional and environmental development, internally and externally. The existence of all these gaps and inequalities, Ms Chen stressed, have given rise to more concerns about the gravity of sustainable development and economic transition.
In the second part of the lecture, Ms Chen, with reference to her profession and research, introduced to the attendees the grand strategic plans that have been formulated by the State Coucil since 2002. Attendees raised a number of questions in the interactive session, ranging from environmental impacts, economic development and career opportunities. Ms Chen responded with brief yet profound information.
After the lecture, Dean Xu Zongling announced Business School's decision as to appoint Ms Chen a guest lecturer for the Economic Forum.
