The School of Business Successfully Held a Lighthouse Sharing Session on "Dialogue with Freshmen - Being a Chinese with a Global Mindset"

Time : 2022-11-17

On the evening of 6 November 2022, the "Lighthouse Sharing Session" of the School of Business was successfully held. Professor Zhou Nan, formerly from the City University of Hong Kong, was invited to share his thoughts on the topic of "Dialogue with Freshmen - Being a Chinese with a global mindset". The sharing session was hosted by Associate Professor Guo Gongxing and Lin Zeya from the Department of Business Management, and all the freshmen of the School of Business Class of 2022 participated online.

At the beginning, Professor Zhou expressed his good wishes to all freshmen. He shared his insights combined the famous words of Zeng Guofan, "A scholar must first have a will, second have knowledge, and third have perseverance; if you have a will, you will keep striving for the better; if you have knowledge, you will know that leaning comes with no ending, so you will not dare to be satisfied with one gain; if you have perseverance, you will never fail to achieve anything. ", encouraging students to set firm aspirations, cultivate a strong will, practice knowledge and wisdom, and persevere to become helpful people.

Professor Zhou conducted a speech

In the sharing session, Professor Zhou recalled his own study experience and described his transformation from "Chinese in identity" before studying abroad - "Chinese in spirit" after returning to China - to "Chinese in the world" today. He hoped that students would continue to discover themselves and contribute to society in the course of their future studies. In particular, Professor Zhou said that in university, students should not only increase their academic knowledge, but also strive for all-round development to become a "PASS" individual -- Physical, Academic, Social and Spiritual-- enhancing their physical strength, studying hard, maintaining a humble attitude, enriching their spiritual world and taking responsibility.

Additionally, Professor Zhou also shared with students about the growth stories of past students, believing that the similar "growing troubles" and different insights of the students would bring different inspirations. Afterwards, Professor Zhou interacted with the online students and answered their questions. Faced with questions from the freshmen about how to study in university, how to transfer what they have learnt, and the gap between reality and the ideal, Professor Zhou taped into the philosophical wisdom of the Tao Te Ching, "Less is more", which has deeply impressed the students who asked questions enthusiastically in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere and sparked their thinking in the free exchange.

The "Lighthouse Sharing Session" aims to lay the foundation for the freshmen to integrate into university life more quickly, guiding them to establish the correct outlook on the world, life, and values, strengthen the "five outlooks" education of the overall situation, collective, legal system, gratitude, and cultivation. It also encourages them to take the initiative to care about the development of the country and society, be bold and enterprising Chinese with a global mindset and contribute their youthful power to the motherland and the people.
