Impression of Participating in CUHK International Summer School 2015

Time : 2015-09-25
Thanks a lot to Li Ka Shing Foundation and Shantou University for offering me such opportunity to take part in CUHK International Summer School (Program) 2015 during the last summer vacation in my college life. Through the International Summer Program, not only did I experience the academic environment of CUHK but I made friends with participants from all over the world.

CUHK International Summer School 2015 offered some 20 courses, encompassing business, Chinese medicine, environmental studies, engineering, social science and language, which were taught by outstanding visiting professors. I was enrolled in the courses of International Finance and Chinese Foreign Policy. My learning experience about International Finance Course will be presented as follow.

International Finance Course aims to analyze international monetary environment and financial management of multinational corporations. The course requires that students who take the course generally have financial background to some degree; otherwise students without financial background may not perform well during the class or the examinations. I screwed up my courage to take the course and at the very beginning it appeared to be a real strain. Gradually I felt that I was improving as I ensured that I previewed the lessons before class, concentrated on the lecture and reviewed the lessons timely.

The course was given by Professor Chuck from University of South Carolina. His class was extremely lively and interesting, enjoyed by most students. Professor Chuck would always begin his lecture with the latest financial issues and encouraged students to have a discussion about why the issue happened and what it would influence. What made me most impressed was the lecture on 9th July, when Professor Chuck played a video about the crash in June in Chinese Stock Market. After that, Professor Chuck analyzed the unpredictable stock market through several stock market crashes around the world, such as the Black Monday in United States. In addition, Professor Chuck invented many financial simulation games in order to help students put what they have learned into practice. Among those simulation games, I was most interested in Foreign Exchange Simulation Game. The Foreign Exchange Game required that three   students formed a bank and banks should trade foreign exchange with each other according to the fluctuation in exchange rate. Finally, through fully cooperating, my bank went to the 2nd among 20 banks in the net profit ranking.

The weeks flew by; however, everything related to the journey in CUHK International Summer School will be a piece of memory that cannot be efface.

Thanks a lot to Li Ka Shing Foundation and Shantou University. I hope that more and more STU students can seize the opportunity to open their eyes to the world.
