The 1st Academic Seminar on Accounting and Finance of Silk Road of the Sea was Successfully Held in Shantou University

On August 20-21, 2022, The 1st Academic Seminar on Accounting and Finance of Silk Road of the Sea was successfully held at Shantou University. The theme of the symposium was "Accounting for the New System in China", which was hosted by School of Business Shantou University and organized by Shantou University Finance and Accounting Research Center. More than 70 scholars from universities and research institutes attended the conference, including Southern University of Science and Technology, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chongqing University, University of International Business and Economics, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics, Central University of Finance and Economics, Jinan University, Wuhan University, Xiamen University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Tongji University, City University of Hong Kong, Northeast University of Finance and Economics, Lanzhou University, etc. The conference was held simultaneously online and offline.

 

On the morning of August 20, the opening ceremony of the conference was successfully held in the multi-functional hall of Shantou University Academic Exchange Center. Professor  Hong Jiang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Shantou University and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Conference, Associate Professor Zhibo Zou, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Dean of Business School, Associate Professor Yue'e Long, Vice Dean of Business School, and Associate Professor Riguang Wen, Dean of Accounting & Finance Department, Business School, attended the opening ceremony. Associate Professor Mingqin Chen, Director of the Finance and Accounting Research Center of Shantou University, presided over the opening ceremony.

 

During the opening ceremony, Secretary Hong Jiang delivered a warm speech, expressing a warm welcome and sincere greetings to the experts and scholars on behalf of Shantou University, and introducing the history, planning, and positioning of the university, the philosophy and characteristics of talent training, as well as the geographical and cultural advantages and prospects of the "Academic Seminar on Accounting and Finance of Silk Road of the Sea".

After the opening ceremony, the conference held a keynote presentation. The special guests, Prof. Qingquan Xin from Chongqing University and Prof. Yong Yang from the Chinese University of Hong Kong gave keynote presentations entitled "Accounting Figures and Securities Regulation" and "Financial Analysts and the Discovery of Corporate Bad News" respectively. The two guests shared their research results and insights in related accounting fields from macro and micro perspectives and encouraged the scholars attending the conference to stick to the original intention and seek truth from facts on the academic path of research, to integrate research and teaching, and to promote the creation and realization of knowledge value.

Parallel forums were held in the afternoon of August 20th and the morning of August 21st. There were nine parallel forums chaired by Professor Huilong Liu from the University of International Business and Economics, Professor Junsheng Zhang from Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Yunguo Liu from Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Junxiong Fang from Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics, Professor Shunlin Song from Central University of Finance and Economics, Professor Hongliang Zheng from the Institute of Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Professor Pingui Rao from Jinan University, Professor Li Qingyuan from Wuhan University and Professor Chaopeng Wu from Xiamen University. Twenty-four speakers presented papers on five sub-themes, including "Human Geography and Corporate Finance", "Institutional Evolution and Corporate Finance", "Policy Shocks and Corporate Behaviour", "Digital Economy and Corporate Finance" and "Corporate Finance and Governance" and received in-depth comments and discussions from outstanding accounting scholars with experience in publishing in top journals at home and abroad. Each of the parallel forums attracted dozens of online and on-site scholars, and the atmosphere of the conference was lively and stimulating, with sparks of ideas colliding.

The third keynote presentation and closing ceremony of the seminar were held on the morning of August 21st. The closing ceremony was chaired by Associate Professor Riguang Wen, Dean of Accounting & Finance Department, School of Business Shantou University.

In the keynote presentation session, special guest Professor Liansheng Wu from the Southern University of Science and Technology gave a presentation entitled "The Impact of Audit Technology on Auditing". Based on the results of a research study conducted by a team for many years, Professor Wu gave a theoretical analytical framework around audit research, emphasized the importance of audit technology development in revealing the black box of the audit process, and reported on the impact of the empirical analysis information technology on audit efficiency and audit quality in the Chinese context.

A total of 69 papers were received for the symposium. Based on the anonymous review by the reviewers, 24 papers were finally selected as the conference presentation papers, among which, 8 were in English and 16 in Chinese. Five papers were selected as the best papers of the symposium after consideration and scoring by the organizing committee reviewers, parallel forum reviewers and moderators. The organizing committee announced the selected best papers and awarded certificates. After the meeting, the organizers and some of the guests on site conducted a study tour and research on the history and current development of the Maritime Silk Road in Shantou.

With a strong academic atmosphere, a lively exchange of views, and a full agenda, the conference provided a platform for participating scholars to exchange experiences, showcase their achievements and enlighten their thoughts.It helps to promote and develop theoretical advances in accounting and financial issues in China and helps to facilitate the effective integration of academic research in serving China's economic and social development.
