Report of the 7th Singapore Visit Program (summer in 2016)

From July 2nd to July 11th, led by Professor Dennis Lee in Business School, 21 students from Shantou University visited Singapore to attend different projects from range of many aspects in this country.
Within these ten days, the program members were introduced the culture, public and private, housing and business of Singapore. Moreover, students had different personally spare time to explore the life style, entertainment and other perspectives here.
 
On July 2nd, participants arrived in Singapore safely from different departure places and were arranged to live in the accommodation.
 
On July 3rd, students attended two lectures and other visiting activities. The first lecture was in conversation with Ms. Catherine Low, who is the Managing director, Country Manager in Singapore and Head of International Trade & Export Finance, Asia, ING Bank (International Netherlands Groups). The second lecture’s topic was “finding your GPS in life” by Professor Freddy Boey, Provost in NTU (Nanyang Technological University). In the rest of time in this day, students visited Chinatown and Night Safari to understand something from culture to nature in Singapore
 
On July 4th, students visited Botanical Garden and Orchid Garden that are in the list of World Cultural Heritage. After it students had conversation and brief lunch in Subway(Singapore branch )with Mr. Raphael Chan, who is Executive Director in Subway Singapore. Later, students visited the Farrer Park Company, which owned Farrer Park Hospital in charitable method.
 
On July 5th, students visited the Land Transport Authority(LTA) and were in conversation with Mr. Jeremy Yap, Deputy Chief Executive. Later students went to Lubrizol Southeast Asia(Pte) Ltd, which is a famous Energy / chemical industry company with world leadership. At night, students from Shantou University had a discussion with young members in Business China Youth Chapter(通商中国).
 
On July 6th, students travelled to Jurong Bird Park to explore biological diversity especially in terms of birds in Singapore. Later, they visited to Jurong East Swimming Complex to appreciate Public Housing Neighbourhood Facilities. At night, students visited toDennis and Clarice’s home to communicate.
 
On July 7th, students visited National University of Singapore(NUS) and had a “leadership” lecture by Dr. Tan Lai Yong, who is the Resident Fellow in Alice&Peter Tan College of NUS. Then they went to HDB Gallery to see the brief introduction of Singapore’s Public Housing Program. They had a friendly basketball game with Singapore youths at night.
 
On July 8th, students had a conversation with Dr. Andrew Goh, the editor in Impact Magazine. Later they went to Marina Barrage to understand the improvement about water conservancy facilities in Singapore. Visiting to National Water Management Strategy and NEWater Center made students know the achievement to solve the water limitation in Singapore.
 
On July 9th, some students visited to Universal Studio and others followed Dennis to climb the mountain. At night they went to Gardens by the Bay to see the night view about music trees.
On the last day, July 10th, students had BBQ in East Coast Park in Singapore and debrief, reflction and sharing in Gardens by the Bay.
 
On July 11th, participants went to next destination or went home from Changi Airport.
 
According to this visiting program, students have improvement in these aspects:
1. Develop an awareness of variations in culture and society between China and Singapore.  
2. Enhance intercultural competence and global vision.
3. Have a hands-on experience in Singapore.
4. Understanding the public, private and people sectors in Singapore.
 
In this program, honestly thanks to Dennis and Clarice for organizing, supporting and caring about in Singapore.
Thanks to Business School in STU for giving students this chance.
And thanks a lot to Kum Yan Methodist Church for offering accommodation to students in this program for whole 10 days.
