STU 2015 Winter Singapore Visiting Program Completed

During January 30 to February 9, 2015, led by Professor Dennis Lee, Chen Weikang and other 23 students spent a rich and meaningful 11 days in Singapore. The visit is designed to give Shantou University students insights of Singapore, broaden their horizons, and cultivate their adaptability, teamwork and leadership skills, while comparing with China.
 
Singapore, also known as the Lion City, is an island nation in Southeast Asia. Singapore is a multicultural nation of immigrants, and is famous for stabilized political situation, honesty and high efficiency government.

During this visit, the STU students and teachers involved in the various aspects of Singapore, like economic, political, cultural, environmental and social. In addition to visiting Night Safari, Hort Park, Marina Bay and other attractions, students also did a lot of site visits at social institutions and exhibits, including Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Singapore Management University (SMU), NewWater Center (Singapore Recycled Water Exhibition), Business China Youth Chapter, and the Singapore Urban Renewal Administration (URA), Housing And Development Board (HDB), Land Transport Authority (LTA) and other sectors. Therefore, students were able to get a glimpse of the social framework and development planning in Singapore from urban construction, housing, land transportation, security and other aspects of society.
 
The STU group also had conversations with a number of business leaders, social elites and college teachers about work, industry, society, and life. They are, Ms Jasmine Teo of SembCorp Industries, Ms Catherine Low of ING Bank NV, Mr Raphael Chan of Singapore Subway, Dr Tan Lai Yong, a Singapore trained rural doctors in Yunan, China for decades, Mr Ong Pang Lin of Lubrizol Company, Mr Keith Leong of Singapore Telecommunications limited company (SingTel), and Ms Ho Kah Yin of Acorn Asia and so on.
 
To cultivate the students' adaptability, teamwork and leadership skills, besides Singapore liaison agencies were handled by Dennis Lee, students' daily activities and the cost in Singapore are all arranged by the students themselves. 23 undergraduate students from various colleges and ages composed of different functional groups (administration, logistic, learning), and deal with the visas, tickets and other activities on their own.
 
Different from the previous Singapore Visiting Program, 23 students and Dennis Lee lived in the Chalet at Changi. They shared what they seen, learned and felt every day. 10 students even got an opportunities to spend two nights in the Singapore resident's homes, and gained Singapore-style living experience.
