The 24
th Scotiabank international case competition was held in London, Ontario, Canada, which is supported by Scotiabank and held by Richard Ivey School of Business. Our business school selected Zhouke Xie, Linhui Fu, Dongmei Li and Yini Guo to form Phoenix Consulting team to participate in this competition.
During the 4 days competition, our student not only experienced fierce case competition, but also take an active part in the interesting social activities.
【Social activities】
The activity include background knowledge quiz, bowling competition, creative photo taking and talent show. It interludes the case competition, and each team is actively prepare for the game, no one shows an unambiguous attitude. Our students actively participate in the game and shows enthusiasm, which help us won a lot of warm applause.
【Country presentation】
In order to improve business school student’s global thinking skill, the organizer asked each to do a country presentation to show each country’s economic and cultural characteristic and the attractiveness to do business in their own country. Our country presentation presented in three international business classrooms and all the audience are the HBA students. Our team start with the traditional cartoon, which is very eye-catching. Then, Zhouke Xie introduce the background of China with humor and lots of interaction with the audience. Next is current economic and political situation which was introduced by Dongmei Li with a clear logic and concise structure. Last is the great potential of China’s luxury industry, and it was present by Yini Guo and Linhui Fu with lots of data analysis and it gained lots of attention. After their presentation, the audience asked many valuable questions and our student answer them with fluent and witty answers, which also won them applauses.
【Case Competition】
During the competition, 9 teams are divided into 3 groups, Phoenix consulting team of Shantou University would have a group competition with teams from Spain and New Zealand, the winner could participate in the final competition.
At the beginning of the competition, the sponsor had arranged a company visit for 9 teams. The company was a family business of horse breeding; our task was to help the company got out of trouble. After arrived at the destination, all of the participants had two hours to visit the farm of the company and ask the CEO for relevant questions. Therefore, we started to get enough basic information about the farm and talked with the finance manager about the financial condition. When we returned to Ivey, we got the case and began the case preparation.
After 15-hour preparation, we did our presentation for the judges with confidence. After the presentation, the judges gave us feedback on our creative advice and great team work, at the same time, they gave us precious advice on our data analysis.
【Visit alumnus】
During the competition, our team get in touch with Rongchang Huang, who is the alumnus of Shantou University and studying in Ivey now. Rongchang Huang paid more attention to our competition performance and got important feedback from the judges, these information made us understand more about the case study. After the competition, our team visit a MSc class in Ivey, the case-method learning impressed us a lot.
【Conclusion】
Scotiabank International Case Competition provides a great opportunity for every participant. Through 6-month training and the 4-day competition, our team members improve the abilities to communicate and shoulder the pressure, at the same time; we have more confidence after the competition.
