In the evening of 24th December, the Business School held a seminar on cultivating elites. The seminar was chaired by Mr Chen Yinglin, the Vice Secretary of the General Party Branch, and joined by Ms Su Bingtian from the Youth League Committee. Dean Xu Zongling, Professor Ouyang Feng and Professor Huang Yan gave their respective speeches in the conference.
‘What is the best way to assess a university in terms of the employability of its graduates?’ Dean Xu Zongling asked, ‘every graduates from the Business School should be asking themselves what relative advantages they possess’. She continued while introduced to the students the four factors effecting employability, including employment rate, industrial structure, starting salary and sustaining career competitiveness. In her speech, Dean Xu also introduced to the attendees the long term plans of the Business School, including the continuing efforts in cultivating elites, further convergence with business schools around the globe and projects for international accreditations.
Professor Ouyang Feng share with the attendees the respective stories of 5 former graduates. ‘As newly graduates of the Business School, only a handful few can get the contracts of transnational firms or go study abroad’, he said, ‘the career paths of those constituting the majority is what concern me the most’. He then went on to discuss various matters in relation to the topic with the students.
‘I think I am a successful person’, Professor Huang Yan started her speech with, ‘students of the Business School should develop virtues and avoid being regarded as only driven by benefits’. Being healthy, happy, and wealthy enough to do what one enjoys doing, as Professor Huang argued, can also be regarded as a type of success. Moreover, she also addressed the importance of blending traditions with virtues in self-development.
The ideas and concepts offered by the three invited speakers had provided profound inspirations to the students.
