Business School Held the 103rd Economic Forum

Time : 2011-03-08

The 103rd Economic Forum was held at the Academic Conference Centre on 4th of March. Professor Sun Qian from Fudan University was invited to give a lecture on international mergers and acquisitions. Professor Lin Danming, Vice President of Shantou University, Professor Xu Zongling, Dean of the Business School, and a number of faculties from the School were invited to the lecture.

Professor Sun started the topic by briefly introducing some facts on the merger between London Stock Exchange and Toronto Stock Exchange which took place in early February this year. A few of other mergers in the financial industry were also analyzed, including the case of NYSE and German Stock Exchange. The factors contributing to this visible trend of merger, according to Sun, are driven by domestic and international needs. Domestically, the SEs are seeking to enhance competitiveness and liquidity; internationally, the trend seems to be influenced by the mixture of globalization and the need for market diversification.

Following the analysis of the international dynamics of mergers, Sun argued that long term strategic plans need to be made for the success of Chinese capital in acquiring assets overseas. Gradual acquisition, promotion of free trade methodology and training of elites in management and operation, as he concluded, are all crucial to Chinese initiated mergers.

After the lecture, Professor Lin Danming, on behalf of the university and the Business School, gave Professor Sun a gift in thanking him for giving the lecture.
