On 12th December, a number of scholars, whose ancestors were originally immigrants from the Chaoshan region, were invited to the Global Mindset Forum in Shantou University. Professor Tan Kun from Business School chaired the forum.

Theme of the forum was ‘Chinese economy, social responsibility and modern day undergraduates’. The invited guests started with sharing with the students and youngsters their life stories and the essential factors in the strive for success. Scholars from UC Davis and Beijing University delivered speeches to examine the correlations among strategic rethinking of the development of the Chinese economy, the miracles of the Chinese economy, strategies for untying the dependency on imports, and the strategies for trade-oriented development. They concluded that foreign demands on Chinese goods are and will continue to be key determinants to the growth of the Chinese economy in the near future. Therefore, according to them, forming strategies for switching to a trade-oriented economy in the longer term would be essential in realizing sustainable development. Another group of scholars, including PhDs from Michigan University, HKU, Sun Yat Sen University etc., shared with the attendees their opinions on various topics associated with social responsibilities.
