On 14th September, Mr Yu Zijia, former student of STU Business School who finished his business administration degree in 2005, were invited to give a lecture in the 11th Alumni Seminar to the current students. Coming back to Shantou University after years studying and working in the GE, he was keen to share his experience with the undergrads. Ms Cui Weiwei of STU Business School chaired the seminar. Zeng Rui, leader of the students affairs division, Ms Su Bingtian and Chen Mingqin, administrative assistant of the dean, were invited to the lecture.

Yu Zhijia joined the GE, one of the biggest cross-industry companies covering science and technology, manufacturing and service in 2005 GE Asia campus recruitment. After the two-year training, he changed four positions, from the first-line sales engineer to China market manager and then project manager of Asia Pacific product. In October 2009, he was promoted to business development manager of GE appliances and lighting products.

At the very beginning of the lecture, Yu Zhijia introduced the history and development of GE to help students better understand this global company. Then he told a story of his own growth experience. Resume and preparations for the interview were very important. Your resume should be concise and unique, use the DongBin word structure, emphasize the outstanding contribution. At the same time, you should fit the needs of the company. As for interview, students should be honest, easygoing and keep smiling with independent opinions. At the interactive stage, students took turns to ask questions and he answered patiently.

As for how to prepare for employment, Yu Zhijia suggested students to answer these questions seriously---who I want to be? What I want to get? What I have to sacrifice? Then one should be adventurous, participate all sorts of campus and social activities such as organization work and internship which are useful for future employment or entrepreneurship.

On the topic of how to enhance leadership, Yu made four suggestions. Firstly, to say to do, which is the premise of winning the other’s respect. Secondly, be willing to accept good ideas, and this is the best way to avoid arbitrage. Thirdly, have a clear mind. It is an indispensable logic ability for a group leader. Fourthly, have the team spirit, this is an important factor for success. Yu also shared his opinions on world, life and value, which provided students with a valuable reference.

At the end, Su Bingtian and Chen Mingqin presented souvenirs to Yu respectively. After the activity, YuZhijia gave some review and guidance for the SIFE team members.
